Prague has one of the best public transportation systems in Europe. The metro, trams and buses are used by two-thirds of Prague's population and cover the majority of the city and outskirts.
The Prague metro (beside trams and buses) is the most used of the means of transport in Prague.
The whole underground network is divided into the three main lines, each represented by its own color:
There are 57 metro stations with 3 important transfer stations – Muzeum (red to green), Můstek (yellow to green) and Florenc (yellow to red). To get from one station to another takes about two minutes.
Alhough the stations are well signposted even for those unfamiliar with the language, in each station there is an information kiosk or a service providing help.
The Prague metro is an open ticket system – no turnstiles. Passengers are obliged to buy and validate a ticket before entering the metro platform. Now you can also buy tickets by SMS or use an application SEJF Mobile wallet. There are uniformed ticket inspectors who have the right to check the validity of the ticket at any time inside the metro area.
With tram you can have access to the downtown Prague and places, where the buses do not enter. The city center has the tram network operating during the day and night.
During the night (from midnight until the 4,30 a.m.) there are transferring tram lines from 51 to 59. Each stop has its schedule.
The tram stop which is marked with the sign =M= means that there is the possibility to get out and continue with the metro.
The intervals are variable from 2 minutes to 20 minutes, depending on the location, peak hours or weekend.
The buses from no. 100 to no. 291 operate all around the city during the day. Each stop has its schedule written on the board.
Also there are bus lines that operate after midnight, when the metro and trams are not in service. The bus lines from 501 to 513 work all night from the midnight (12.00) till the 4,30 a.m. in the morning.
The bus stop marked with the sign =M= indicates that you can get out of the bus and continue with the metro.

Ticket vending machines are installed in all metro stations and at selected surface transit stops. They are intended for the purchase of individual tickets. If a transit ticket vending machine is not working properly, please contact our service centre:
Once you have your ticket, punch it in the little yellow franking machine (photo below) before you go down to the metro or as you get on the bus or tram. The ticket is valid from the moment it is punched.
You may change between trams, buses, the metro and trains (in area of Prague) as you wish. You do not need to have a new ticket, regardless of how many times you change, until the time period runs out. Note that the ticket machines accept only mostly coins.
Pre-paid tickets are valid for unlimited travel on any bus, tram or metro line throughout the city area. They are also valid on some suburban train routes up to the city boundary. The ID / ISIC card of the CULS with the public transportation coupon can serve as transport pass (photo). Please keep in mind to have both of these cards.
If you are caught without a valid ticket, you will be required to pay a fine of CZK 1000, reduced to CZK 800 if it is paid on the spot or within 15 days.
Always insist on getting a receipt. If you have left your valid pass at home, you pay a CZK 50 fine at Prague 2, Na Bojišti 5 (Metro Line C – I. P. Pavlova station) from the next day (12.30 pm) till the 15th day after (+showing your valid pass).
